How to Prepare for a Rust Wipe Day

Decide your server and your team before wipe day, agree a base location and roles in advance, spend everything you have on the old wipe rather than storing it, and be online at the reset rather than an hour after it.

Wipe day rewards preparation more than any other day in Rust. The first few hours set up the entire cycle, and most of the work that decides them happens before the server comes up.

Pick the server in advance. Deciding at the spawn screen means either queuing for a full server or settling for whatever has space. Check the wipe calendar, choose a server that matches your group size and region, and confirm its wipe time in your own timezone. If it is popular, be in the queue before the reset rather than after.

Sort the team out first. Wipe day is the worst possible time to find teammates — everyone is already playing. Arrange the group beforehand, and agree on who farms what: one person on stone and wood for the starter base, one on sulfur, one scouting a build spot. Three people with assigned roles will out-progress five people all doing the same thing.

Empty out before the wipe. Anything left in a box is deleted. The night before, spend it: craft explosives and run one last raid, hand materials to teammates who will use them, or simply blow something up for fun. Hoarding into a wipe is pure waste.

Have a plan for the first hour. Land, gather enough for a 2x1 starter base with a tool cupboard, and get a bag down. A tool cupboard claims your spot before someone else does; a bag means dying does not send you across the map. Do not try to build the big base on hour one — a good starter base you actually finish beats an ambitious one you do not.

Think about where you build. Close to a road or a small monument gives you easy scrap and recycler access. Directly next to a large monument means constant traffic and being raided by people who are already there. Being too remote means safety but long, exposed runs for everything. For most groups, a quiet spot within a short run of a road is the balance.

Learn the new map early. Every wipe regenerates the terrain, so monument locations change. Ten minutes spent finding your nearest recycler, road and water source pays for itself all cycle.

The most common wipe-day mistakes: joining hours late, farming without a plan, over-building on day one, and storing loot in an unprotected starter base. Every one of them is avoidable with a decision made the night before.
